Eligibility

Paid Family Leave (PFL)

When Are You Eligible?
Who Can You Care For?

You can use Paid Family Leave to care for the following family members if they have a serious health condition:

Statutory Disability (DBL)

When Are You Eligible?
Who Can You Care For?

Statutory Disability provides benefits when you are unable to work because of your own off-the-job illness, injury, pregnancy or recovery from childbirth. It does not provide benefits to care for a family member.

Care can include physical care, emotional support, visitation, treatment assistance, help with essential daily living, and providing transportation. See your plan document for a complete list.

How PFL & DBL Work Together

PFL and DBL are separate benefits that work together to give you a combined maximum of 26 weeks of benefits within a rolling 52-week period.

COMBINED MAXIMUM — 26 WEEKS
Paid Family Leave (PFL)

You can receive up to 12 weeks of PFL.

Statutory Disability (DBL)

You can receive up to 26 weeks of DBL.

If you use both within the same 52-week period, you can receive no more than 26 weeks combined. You cannot receive PFL and DBL benefits at the same time.

How Eligibility is Determined

Each time you request PFL or DBL, Lincoln Financial will look back at the 52 weeks immediately before your leave or disability begins. Any PFL or DBL benefits you received during that period count toward the 26-week combined maximum.

Example: If you received eight weeks of DBL earlier in the 52-week lookback period and later qualify for PFL, those eight weeks count toward your 26-week combined maximum.

What about the Family Medical Leave Act (FMLA)?

If you are eligible for FMLA, FMLA generally runs concurrently with PFL or DBL when the same absence qualifies under both programs. Both FMLA and PFL provide job-protected leave and continuation of eligible benefits while you are on an approved leave. However, FMLA does not provide pay on its own. PFL may provide income replacement for qualifying family leave reasons, while DBL provides wage replacement when you are unable to work due to your own non-work-related illness or injury but does not provide job protection or benefit continuation.

DBL and Short-Term Disability (STD)

If you qualify for both STD and DBL, STD may provide a higher weekly benefit. Lincoln Financial will assess your eligibility for STD benefits if you become disabled and will coordinate the application process, ongoing claims management, and payments if you qualify for both. Visit the Disability page to learn more about STD.
